Our Journey Towards Sustainability
In the tradition of our Franciscan heritage, the CAC seeks to honor the inherent connectedness of all things by protecting and healing our relationship with Earth. Ecology is a modern word for what medieval Franciscan scholars called “The Great Chain of Being.” They predicted that if we stopped seeing God in any one link of the chain, the whole thing would fall apart. And so, it seems, the world is falling apart.
The CAC is dedicated to increasing humanity’s awareness of God’s presence in all created things, to begin mending and wholing the brokenness of our religion, culture, society, and ecosystems. As Francis mirrored the sow, telling the pig through words and touch and blessing that she is indeed beautiful, we strive to mirror the beings—human and other—in our sphere, “re-teaching things their loveliness” (Galway Kinnell). We hope someday all of Earth will remember their incredible value and blessedness. We are committed to living and working simply, sustainably, rather than wasting or hoarding Earth’s resources, so that we leave a renewed Earth for future generations.
