Pre-Conference Contemplative Experience
Want some help slowing down before the conference begins? Move into a relaxed and prayerful
space before the conference begins through Walking Meditation, Body Prayer, and Taize. Friday,
November 9, 9:30am - 12:30pm.
No Additional Fee! Pre-registration required.
12-Step Meetings
The Conference will offer two sessions of 12-Step Meetings: Open Speaker Meetings and Closed Discussion Meetings.
Open Speaker meetings, which all are welcome to attend without making a declaration of
addiction, will be led by an individual in recovery. They will share their experience, strength and
hope by offering their personal recovery stories. Closed Discussion meetings are for people who
identify with particular addictions and wish to embrace a path of recovery. The only requirement
for attendance to the Closed Discussion meeting is a desire to be free of the particular addiction.
Meetings offered will include: Alcoholics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous,
Debtors Anonymous, Workaholics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Sex/Love Addicts Anonymous,
Al-Anon (for families and friends of alcoholics), and addiction to religion.
Marketplace of Possibilities
On Saturday afternoon, a three hour "open space" event will occur where participants will move
between various educational and healing opportunities. Organizations and institutions will offer
information at tables throughout the areas neighboring our meeting spaces.
The Sacred Wound-A Healing Service
Although all 12-Step groups are inherently about healing, we want to offer a prayerful healing
service on Sunday morning. Fr. Richard will help us to ritualize our wounding in a simple way, and
then offer those wounds to God for healing.
Thomas Worship Service
The Thomas Worship Service was first created in Finland in 1988 by a collection of ministers of
various denominations, artists, musicians, and civic leaders in an effort to create a prayerful service
that would again fill their cathedrals. They recognized that much of Europe had become a continent
of skeptics, and so they named the service after St. Thomas "the Doubter." It retrieves the historic
meaning of the very word "liturgy" as a collective work of the people. It is for believers, seekers
and doubting Thomases alike! It is an ecumenical worship service that includes full lay participation
and optional creative responses to the preached word.
Continuing Education Units
This conference will provide 8.5 CEU credits for LPC (Licensed Professional Counselors), LMFT
(Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists), LCDC (Addiction Professionals) and social workers who
are licensed in Texas. If you live outside of Texas, please check with your state licensing board to
determine whether the credits will be accepted.
About the Sponsor
The Center for Action and Contemplation, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was founded in 1987 by Franciscan Father Richard Rohr. Father Rohr saw the need for a training/formation center that would allow spiritually seeking people to integrate a contemplative lifestyle and compassionate service. The CAC attracts people from around the world who seek peaceful, positive alternatives and solutions to the difficult challenges of our often materialistic, irrational and violent world. The center offers different programs and resources which you can read about on this website.
